The Namesake - a movie that has a title like that is sure to attract curiosity and fascination. It certainly gripped my attention.
The Namesake is directed by Mira Nair, who also bought us movies like Vanity Fair and Monsoon Wedding. This movie is about American-born Indian named Gogol, who comes from a family of Indian immigrants, and wants to fit in and be like his fellow New Yorkers, despite his family's reluctance to let go of their customary and conventional ways. The movie explores the clashing of two cultures and two different ways of life. It’s a family drama that tells a story of a present-day American family that come to New York from India to find the world of boundless opportunities for their future.
The movie stars Kal Penn, as the central character, Gogol, who we may remember from Harold & Kumar and Van Wilder: Party Liaison for his hilarious and entertaining performances, with Irfan Khan and Tabu starring as his parents Ashok and Ashima, who truly are stars on screen. This movie is definitely not the one to be missed by their fans.
